Goals

Goals; Ch. 4; p. 108

The term "goals" always resonates with me because I play and coach hockey, but I also understand the organizational meanings for "goals." I know the goals I have as a coach is to not just have my team score goals, but also to motivate my players to work hard on and off the ice. When I hear a player isn't doing well in school, I suspend the player until they can prove they are improving their grade. Sports are a luxury, education is a privilege.
Another example is at my work, each employee has their own personal goals while there. My goal is to try and sell as much unused ice time possible in order to make a good commission and also make the rink more money. This also helps the profitability of the available ice time to be sold. If I don't sell the open ice time, the company loses money (electricity, Zamboni usage, labor, etc.).

  1. Good example of the term goals, especially because hockey is kick ass! Anyway, I can relate to the work example, we try and sell as many add ons as we can, especially with the economy being so low and business being so slow lately. It’s hard to be able to set the goals you were able to reach last year, and actually be able to get them when we’re also trying to keep our business a float.

  2. I completely relate to your goals. As a swim coach I have goals for each and every one of my swimmers. At the beginning of each season, we sit down and discuss with each swimmer what they would like to accomplish of the year. Once we decide on that, we then sit down and discuss what we are going to do in order to accomplish those goals. Here it is a team process between me, the coach, and my swimmer.
Not only do I have goals that must be met for my swimmer, but I have individual goals as a coach. I coach the 8 and Under's and it is my goal to have them all legal in all four strokes by our championship meet.
Goals are a good way to keep us determined and on task. If we didn't set goals for ourselves we would all be lost!
